[AIHA Membership] 53rd Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair - Poster Judging by HI-AIHA

To our membership:

It is time once again for the Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair!  This year the 53rd year of the fair will be held at the Hawaii Convention Center April 5 - 7, 2010.  Please see the attached flyer.       

Please let me know if you would be willing and able to help us with the judging for the Science Fair posters either 5 - 8 PM Monday, April 5th, or 9:30 - 12:30 AM Tuesday April 6th.  I would like, if possible, to have one individual for each group, so we could have up to five people for:

Junior Display (grades 6 - 8)   Award = $100.00
Senior Research (grades 9 - 12) Award = $200.00 (Vern Hoo Memorial Award)
Junior Research (grades 6 - 8)  Award = $100.00
Open Division (grades 6 - 12)   Award = $100.00
Teacher Award                   Award = $100.00 voucher

Criteria includes method, style, and applicability to health and safety, but there is plenty of room for "professional judgment".  These are young people learning to be good scientists, and we want to encourage them in every way.  Each time I have attended the fair, I have been amazed at the creativity and talent our students show.  I like the fair, because it reassures me that our future is in good hands, and there are a lot of great students who love science. 

This is the first year for a teacher award, and as such, criteria has not yet been clearly determined.  It may be that we will select a teacher from the poster session, and interview them by phone.  Our current president, Gordon Yamamoto, will be making the award presentations on Thursday, April 7th, starting at 4:30 P.M. (see the flyer).    

Please contact me by March 31st, and I will confirm with you by e-mail.  Last year there were a limited number of parking passes; I think this year there may not be any available due to budget issues.
