To All:

Each year the Hawaii Academy of Sciences sponsors the state-wide
science fair, open to all of Hawaii's school children. From this competition the
winning contestants go on to participate in the International Science Fair
that will be held in May 10 - 15, 2009 in Reno, Nevada.

Ray Benzing and I will be judging these contestants on behalf of our
local section the evenings of Wednesday,April 1st and Thursday, April 2nd.
Won't you come and help us? There are several categories, and different grade
levels. It doesn't take much time, and I think you will be inspired, I know
I was last year. Despite the gloom we continue to hear about the future of
science in the United States, I was very impressed by the quality and depth of
research expertise of many of the entries, and the creativity and genuine
cleverness of many more.

If you would send me your name, I will ask the Academy to mail me a
parking pass for each of us so you can park in Blaisdell those evenings free of
charge. Last year I brought my son, so he could see the different projects
on display. We saw a solar-powered Lego car, a study of Hawaiian plants,
work done with bees, robots, neuroscience, engineering, and more.

Please let me know if you would be willing to participate. I will get
more details this week, but if it is run as it was last year, we will visit
the Blaisdell Center from 7 - 9 in the evening. I will double-check times
and dates.

As I mentioned, this judging is done on behalf of the Hawaii Local
Section of the AIHA. We provide $100 or $200 scholarships to the students we
think are the best in the categories we are given to judge, which includes
Environmental Sciences. There are dozens of local organizations doing the same
thing, showing support for our children.

All monies and awards are presented to the selected students at a
dinner held after the judging. Our $200 Award is in memory of our friend and
past president, Vernon Hoo.

Mahalo for your help! Look forward to hearing from you.
